Emotional Intelligence Training For Those Involved in Activities Concerned with Young People
Current Behaviour Management Strategies
Traditional approaches are continually seeking ways in which behaviour can be improved. Many years of surveying and experience by social workers probation officers and psychologists is illustrating that they are still finding behaviour management a real challenge and often are completely at a loss in terms of how to manage behaviour. Behaviour management strategies can help and use tactics in a systematic and positive way in order to encourage the individuals to observe rules. Rewards and sanctions systems have been used for many years and there are some useful positive behaviour management systems available to today’s reformers.
Unfortunately, these behaviour systems do not work in the long term unless they are accompanied by approaches, which focus on the development of the individuals’ understanding of their own and others’ emotions and the relationship between emotions and behaviour. Individuals need to understand the role of emotions in their learning and need to learn the importance of empathy and responsibility from within.
Without an approach, which teaches individuals, the value of emotions and feelings and how feelings and behaviour are inextricably intertwined, any external management strategies will be relying on fear and external control. The behaviour will be ‘managed’ by external means, and will be dominated by mechanisms, which are not in tune with the individuals’ emotions, and their age related psychology. There is always a limit to the effectiveness of human behaviour or management approaches that rely solely on external frameworks, such as rewards and sanctions. These approaches focus on the external, observable and measurable elements of human behaviour, and do not take into account the complexity of human behaviour, and the fundamental importance of the underlying emotions that guide and shape the behaviour.
Individual understanding of behaviour change
Often the reasoning behind desired behaviour change is explained to individuals as being necessary in order to create a particular life environment. Individuals are asked to behave in a particular manner and they are provided with a rationale by the society. Some external measure or outcome is the aim. These external measures are important, but in order to create any long term, lasting change in human behaviour, the motivation has got be intrinsic and has got to come from within the individual. By confronting emotions through carefully structured activities, individuals will gain an internal understanding to complement the external observable factors. Where better to explore the field of emotions and behaviour than in the training room with the opportunity to draw on each other’s experiences?
Current knowledge
With our current knowledge about the neuropsychology and biology of the brain, as well as the vast range of knowledge and experience we have from teachers and researchers in the school environment and the learning process over many years, Learning Pages has now written a approach to train young adults especially the most vulnerable to train and raise the awareness of these emotions.
The extent to which behaviour is a reflection of emotions and feelings from within is a question of long standing debate. Behaviour and emotions are extremely complex and of course there is a direct link. The LEARNING PAGES approach addresses the inner emotions, as these emotions will be the key to behavioural control. Individuals will gain an increased understanding about the dynamics of their emotions and their behaviours. They will come to appreciate that their own recognition and awareness of emotions has a direct influence on the extent to which they understand themselves and others, as well as the extent to which they can be in control of their own behaviour and spontaneous reactions in everyday life.
Summary of rationale
- Key to behaviour change has to come from within
- Exploring emotions using appropriate techniques, where individuals are given respect for their individuality will create change and awareness from within
- The Learning Pages EI Approach is based on teaching the understanding of emotions from within in order to create long-term solutions to behaviour problems and tackle the core issue underlying problems
- Assigning responsibility to individuals for their behaviour will create a positive learning climate, which fosters empathy and caring for others
Exploring the importance of reflection in order to encourage thinking skills and self awareness will have a positive impact on whole school ethos - It is possible to strengthen and foster self-awareness through carefully planned activities and group exercises
- Individuals’ self-awareness and self-responsibility as well as the role of the individual as an influencer of group dynamics and everyday events can be strengthened and learnt through experiential learning exercises and appropriate techniques. These learning experiences can have a direct impact on individual behaviour
Through exercises exploring individual differences, individuals become more aware of similarities and differences between themselves and others, which in turn increases the understanding of the emotions underlying behaviour
The Individuals’ self-responsibility and self control is strengthened, which increases the likelihood that they think before they speak or act
By raising the profile of inclusion and individual differences, individual empathy will increase

Learning Pages Approach to facilitators who will administer the approach recognise that the training of delegates will not come quickly and the only way to achieve the outcomes is an incremental approach over a period of time
To meet this need the training will be carried out in the following style
A development period is agreed, usually over a 12 month period
The Development Period will start by an introduction to the approach
The weekly DL course will start this will facilitated by various media routes including on line training and emails
Throughout the year 4 days will be allocated to venue training at where each of the days will be allocated to the five domains of emotional intelligence
These include
Self awareness
Emotional control and Management
Self Motivation
Empathy
Social skills
Attendees will receive
The DL course every week
200 Page Manual
300 PP slides as a reference library
Course delegates sheets
